Private Instruction
Flute Lessons
Study the flute with Jonathan Oldham — a dedicated teacher with a passion for helping students find their voice on the instrument.
- Lessons are typically weekly (preferred for steady progress) and offered in 30-minute or 60-minute durations.
- Lessons are held in-person at my studio location in Charlotte, NC or hybrid with virtual options available upon request.
- The studio follows a full academic-year schedule (September–May), with optional summer lessons (June–August) offered upon request for further development.
- A studio calendar will be provided each semester listing all teaching dates, holidays, and breaks. Lessons are not held on major holidays or during my scheduled professional absences (notice will be given).
- Tuition rates: $30 per 30-min lesson, $50 per 60-min lesson.
- Payment is due at the beginning of each month.
- Late payments after 7 days incur a $20 late fee. Unpaid tuition may result in suspended lessons until resolved.
- Acceptable payment methods: cash, check, or Venmo/Zelle/CashApp.
- Scholarships are available upon request (for more information regarding scholarships, please reach out).
- Tuition is non-refundable except in cases of extended illness or relocation (pro-rated at my discretion).
- Note: Private music lessons in North Carolina are not subject to sales tax.
- Students must arrive on time with all materials. Late arrivals will receive a shortened lesson to respect the next student’s time.
- 12-hour advance notice is required for cancellations (via text or email).
- Missed or forgotten lessons (less than 12-hour notice or no notice) are not made up and are still charged.
- Make-up lessons are allowed for excused absences (illness, family emergency, or vacation)—make-ups are scheduled based on availability and cannot be guaranteed.
- If I must cancel, the lesson will be rescheduled or credited.
- Consistent daily practice is essential for progress on the flute.
- Minimum practice: 5 days per week: 10–30 minutes for beginners; 45–60+ minutes for intermediate/advanced students (can be broken into shorter sessions).
- Focus areas will include tone development, scales/arpeggios, technique, etudes, repertoire, and sight-reading. I will provide specific assignments and practice strategies each week.
- Students are encouraged to keep a simple practice log to track progress.
- If consistent practice is not happening, we will discuss adjustments or whether lessons remain the best fit.
- Your own flute in good working condition (student/professional model).
- Assigned method books, etude books, and sheet music (I will provide links or purchase options; you are responsible for obtaining them).
- Metronome and tuner (app-based is fine).
- Cleaning rod and cloth (any necessary maintenance supplies).
- Music stand (for home practice).
- Pencil and notebook (practice log) recommended for every lesson.
- Note: Students must arrive with flute and assigned materials for every lesson. Lessons without them may be shortened or focused on review only.
- All students are strongly encouraged (especially for intermediate/advanced levels) to participate in the annual Spring Recital (typically April/May in Charlotte, NC area).
- Additional performance opportunities may include studio classes, local Charlotte events, festivals, or collaborations with other musicians.
- Recital participation requires full preparation of assigned pieces by the deadline.
- Be respectful, positive, and ready to learn.
- No food/drink (except water) during lessons.
- Cell phones should be silenced and put away unless used for recording practice (with permission).
- Parents/siblings are welcome to observe quietly, but should not interrupt or interject during the lesson (parents/siblings may be kindly asked to leave if interruptions interfere with the lesson experience).
- Punctual drop-off and pick-up are appreciated—please do not leave students early or arrive late for pickup.
- Parents are key partners!
- Ensure timely arrival/pickup and attendance.
- Help obtain materials promptly.
- Encourage and supervise home practice.
- Communicate any concerns, questions, or life changes promptly.
- Note: I welcome questions via email/text. Best times for quick replies: weekdays from 9:00AM–4:00PM.
- Primary contact: joflute112903@gmail.com or 704-743-6794.
- Note: I check messages daily and will respond within 24 hours during business hours [weekdays from 9:00AM–4:00PM].
- Studio updates, assignments, and calendar changes will be sent via email/group text.
- Lessons continue from semester to semester unless notice is given.
- To discontinue, provide written notice at least 2 weeks before the end of the current semester (or before the next payment is due).
- I reserve the right to discontinue lessons for repeated unexcused absences, lack of practice/preparation, or unpaid tuition.
- Any pre-paid lessons will be pro-rated or credited where possible.
