Getting Started

  • Lessons are typically weekly (preferred for steady progress) and offered in 30-minute or 60-minute durations.
  • Lessons are held in-person at the studio in Charlotte, NC, with virtual options available upon request.
  • The studio follows a full academic-year schedule (September–May/June), with optional summer lessons (June–August) offered weekly or bi-weekly.
  • A studio calendar is provided each semester listing all teaching dates, holidays, and breaks.
  • Lessons are not held on major holidays or during scheduled professional absences — advance notice will always be given.
  • Tuition rates: $30 per 30-minute lesson · $50 per 60-minute lesson.
  • Payment is due at the beginning of each month.
  • Late payments after 7 days incur a $20 late fee. Unpaid tuition may result in suspended lessons until resolved.
  • Accepted methods: cash, check, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or CashApp.
  • Scholarships are available upon request — reach out for more information.
  • Note: Private music lessons in North Carolina are not subject to sales tax.
  • Tuition is non-refundable except in cases of extended illness or relocation (pro-rated at Jonathan's discretion).

Attendance & Practice

  • Students must arrive on time with all materials. Late arrivals will receive a shortened lesson to respect the next student's time.
  • 24-hour advance notice is required for cancellations via text or email.
  • Make-up lessons per semester are allowed for excused absences (illness, family emergency, or vacation with one-month advance notice) — make-ups are scheduled based on availability and cannot be guaranteed.
  • Missed or forgotten lessons (no notice) are not made up and are still charged.
  • If Jonathan must cancel, the lesson will be rescheduled or credited.
  • Consistent daily practice is essential for progress on the flute.
  • Minimum practice: 5 days per week — 10–30 minutes for beginners; 45–60+ minutes for intermediate/advanced students (can be broken into shorter sessions).
  • Focus areas include tone development, scales/arpeggios, technique, etudes, repertoire, and sight-reading.
  • Specific assignments and practice strategies will be provided each week.
  • Students are encouraged to keep a simple practice log to track progress.
  • If consistent practice is not happening, adjustments will be discussed together.

Materials & Events

  • Your own flute in good working condition (student or professional model).
  • Assigned method books, etude books, and sheet music — links or purchase options will be provided.
  • Metronome and tuner (app-based is fine).
  • Cleaning rod and cloth (and any necessary maintenance supplies).
  • Music stand for home practice.
  • Pencil and notebook (practice log) recommended for every lesson.
  • Students must arrive with their flute and assigned materials. Lessons without them may be shortened or focused on review only.
  • All students are strongly encouraged (especially intermediate/advanced) to participate in the annual Spring Recital, typically held in April/May in the Charlotte, NC area.
  • Additional performance opportunities may include studio classes, local Charlotte events, festivals, or collaborations with other musicians.
  • Recital participation requires full preparation of assigned pieces by the deadline.
